Collectible Silver Certificate

These Silver Certificates are currency that use to allow the bearer to trade them in for silver dollars or silver bullion. The United States issued paper currency known as silver certificates from 1878 to 1963. These were backed by silver dollars held by the U.S. Treasury and could be redeemed for silver dollars at banks. The notes carried a unique legend printed on the front that said silver had been deposited in the U.S. Treasury, and that the person carrying the paper money could receive the precious metal on demand. However, the notes haven't been redeemable for real silver since the 1960s, because of a change in federal law that was brought on by rising silver prices. The government shredded many silver certificates because, after the notes were redeemed, they lost their backing in silver and could not be released into circulation again.
